It starts by reading an interesting topic or story on the internet and, before you realize it, you are clicking links right and left and it leads you down a road so bizarre you aren't quite sure how you got there.
Today on my Facebook page, was a story about a little girl named Rosalina Lombardo who died of pneumonia at the age of almost 2 in 1920. Apparently her father was so distraught that he sought well known embalmer, Alfredo Salafia, to preserve her. The result of his techniques is unbelievable and unmatched.
Beautiful - she is sometimes called Sleeping Beauty |
Anyway, to make a long story short this eventually segued into the Victorian Era of postmortem photography.
Apparently it was common practice during this period to take pictures of a loved one after they died as a remembrance of them. This in itself is not all that weird but what I found so so so so so so bizarre was that sometimes these pictures were taken with the living members of the family. The deceased was propped up and posed so as to look alive. As I said, weird!
Not too bad - a mother with her baby |
Okay...this one is a bit weird. Notice the stiff legs? |
Equally weird |
Gosh darn creepy. Notice the stiff posed arms of the girl standing? She is being held up by a device commonly used in postmortem photography. |
Very creepy indeed.
**Discalimer** These images are from google and there is no way to prove the authenticity of these photos.
