Zack has AD(H)D. The H part which stands for hyper active is not necessarily a huge issue. But the Attention Deficit part wreaks havoc with his concentration - especially if he is un-medicated or his medication is no longer effective. He was initially diagnosed 6 years ago and is on his 3rd medication - he seems to do well on a medication for two years and then... well...not. I can definitely tell when he needs a medication change because it really shows in his school work.
School has always been interesting with Zack. All through 5th and 6th grade, I had to have access to all of Zack's work. I would need to check it over to make sure he had it done...and done correctly. Because let me tell you, he could come up with some answers that would leave you scratching your head saying to yourself, "what in the world are you thinking?"
Frustrations would occasionally surface as he would forget he had a big assignment due or forget about a test. Last year he ended the year with all A's and B's but it was only because of me. Because I would check our online school system at the beginning of each week and keep on top of his assignments and tests.
Sooooo, as this school year began I told him I was done driving his train. This was the year for him jump in the driver's seat and take control - and if he failed, he would have to suffer the consequences.
Well, to my delightful surprise, he had managed to get all A's and B's so far this year.
And just to because I am so gosh darn proud of him...these are his grades mid-way through the fourth quarter. Not even an A- among them.
