As our country moves closer to some socialist traits with our
current insurance and health care situation, many have expressed views,
positive and negative, on where they stand with this issue.
One woman actually joked that she was raising tiny socialists
because she was teaching her children to "share" their cookies.
In other words, if you had 20 cookies, and your neighbor did not have
any, wouldn't you want to share your cookies so everyone gets some?
Gee...that does sound really nice (and it's basically how Hitler
was able to establish control over Germany and Austria without a fight) but
what if...just what if...this same neighbor you shared your cookies with was on
your doorstep every night when you pulled into your driveway after a
hard day of work ...and this same neighbor walked up to you with their hands
out looking for their share of your daily cookies? How long would you
be able to hand over part of your hard earned cookies before you get fed
up giving some to a person who does nothing to contribute to earning them?
Now, I do support the idea of social programs overall because I
think it provides a vital need in our society. I myself was using food stamps
for a four month period of time when I was between jobs and had three young
children to support. The problems arise when our neighbors stand with
their hand out taking, taking, and taking and never earning...just because they
can...because our society has made it so easy for them to continue to do
this.
I prefer, then, to look at myself more as the Little Red Hen.
You didn't help me make the cookies...so you do not need to help me eat
the cookies! Period!
Okay...rant over.
